American Road Trips To Put on Your Bucket List

October 16, 2017

I have traveled to almost all 50 states by way of a car. As I love road trips and the adventures we have as a family. There is still so much to explore. As a new biker, my bucket list expanded even more. Here is my top bucket list of American roads I want to travel. No matter if you are on 4 wheels or 2. I am sure you will enjoy these American road trips.

**I may earn some cash from the companies mentioned in this post. That being said,  I only recommend products that I’ve used and loved! I Thank you for your support. Read full disclosure here.

The Tail Of The Dragon

Deal’s Gap Robbinsville, NC

The Mount Everest to motorcycles. The beast of all beast. The dragon is one of the most talked about road trips amongst motorcyclist and drivers. Complete this and earn yourself a nice “I survived the Dragon” patch. This stretch of road has 318 curves in only 11 miles. Use extreme caution on this as many young drivers like to speed on the curves.  Want more of the dragon click here.

The dragon

This is still my bucket list although readers beware I have traveled along these roads before. However, not on my motorcycle which one day I would like to achieve.

The Snake

Tennessee

Another curvy road much like the Dragon. Across 3 mountains, 1 valley, and 13 miles lies 489 curves. Another motorcyclist dream. Starting from Mountain City, TN. Take highway 421 North through the Cherokee National Forest which leads you to Holston Valley, TN. This separates the real bikers from the weekend riders. To learn more click here.

Blue Ridge Parkway

North Carolina/ Virginia

There is no shortage of breathtaking views while on Blue Ridge Parkway. Enjoy a summer road trip and take in the other outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, and hiking. Enjoy the light bugs light up the campsites at night. If summer is too hot. Take a nice fall road trip and see the changing of the leaves as you pass by. Blue Ridge Parkway has many outlets to other scenic roads that will lead you to camping, fishing, hiking, and more. Download an interactive map and stay up to date on the roads here.

Around Lake Pontchartrain

Louisiana

I live near Lake Pontchartrain and had been all sides of this massive lake. However, I have never driven all the way around it. It is a one day trip and I am sure the whole family would enjoy or just a nice couple motorcycle ride with my husband and myself.

Smoky Mountains

Tennesse/North Carolina

If you ever enjoyed Gatlinburg, Tn. Then you might be familiar with the smoky mountain roads. There are many roads to chose from to take in the scenery. There are 384 miles of road to explore. I was lucky enough over Spring break 2017 to take my family to Cades Cove Loop. Here you will encounter waterfalls, curves, old churches, cemeteries, and a flour mill. Look out for the black bears and turkeys as they are throughout the park. Keep in mind if you are traveling during the winter months some roads might closed for the winter. Here are the scenic roads to explore in the Smoky Mountains. Cades Cove Loop Road, Cove Creek Road, Clingmans Dome Road,  Little River Road, Newfound Gap Road, Roaring Forks Motor Trail, Tremont Road, and Balsam Mountain. Many of these roads are already on my bucket lists such as the Blue Ridge Mountains and Tail of the Dragon. Which are all located between Tennessee and North Carolina and making up the Smoky Mountains.

Going to The Sun Road

Glacier National Park, MT

Ok, I have to admit I have been on this road so many times as a child and an adult with my own children. I only lived a few hours away. The scenery is breathtaking. I added this because I want to take this trip on my motorcycle.  This road is full of curves and death defining cliffs to rocky shoulders. The road is narrow and RVs and campers are not allowed. There are plenty of places to pull off and snap great photos of the mountain tips still covered in snow in late June and the mountain goats grazing on grass. This place is so magical. Take a look at how the rock walls cry. Look for a sign called the weeping wall. Glacier National park is a great place to camp, hike, and fish as well.

Iron Mountain Road and Pigtail Bridges

Black Hills, South Dakota

Once again, I have been here as a child and I remember all those curves we took to get to Mount Rushmore. Another motorcycle ride I want to experience so I added this to the bucket list. Located in the Custer State Park this road stretches only 17 miles. Enjoy one-way tunnels, the landscape, and a view of Mount Rushmore.

Mount Rushmore

Devil’s Whip

Black Mountain, NC

With a name like that only the brave of hearts enter this 12 miles of road with 160 curves and an elevation of 2,000 feet. This is not for the novice motorcyclist. This route is on North Carolina’s route 80 and crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway. Another driver beware and drive safe.

Pacific Coast Highway

California

Route 1, gives you a stunning view of the Pacific coast line. An American favorite. Enjoy jagged cliffs to the Pacific coast, curves, bridges, and California sun. Enjoy places such as Los Anglos, The Queen Mary, Santa Monica, California’s finest beaches, San Diego, and much more. This road trip is full of fun attractions the whole family would enjoy. Looking for a couples retreat. Revamp that love on a week-long trip for two. Another motorcycle dream. After all, it is California.

Florida Coast line to Key West

Florida

Take a sunny trip along the coastline of Florida. Start in Jacksonville, Fl make your way to Daytona Beach. From Daytona make your way west. Here you will hit Orlando, Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg. Cruise along the west coast until you hit Naples, Fl. Again, head east to Miami. The rest of the drive is south along the Everglades National Park until you hit Key West.

Coast to Coast

I-10

Imagine going from the east coast to the west coast. Maybe west coast to east coast. There are many ways to get from one side of the country to the other. However, we are talking about the route on I-10. Since I am closer to the east coast I will start there. Starting in Jacksonville, Fl. Make your way along I-10. The beauty of this ride you will not be taking any other interstates. Places to stop include Savannah, GA, New Orleans, Carlsbad Caverns, Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree National Park, and much more. Enjoy this 3, 960 miles of interstate from coast to coast.

Joshua Tree

I would love to do a road trip across the USA one day. I’ve driven to Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia, but never really with the intention of making it a road trip. Hopefully, I’ll be able to make that dream come true one day, especially on the west coast!
