Myths About Curly Hair: How to Take Care of Your Curls

Myths About Curly Hair: How to Take Care of Your Curls can be daunting. Every curly hair girl knows that keeping those curls looking flawless is a daily task. Take it from me I had no clue. I thought that beautiful hair was keeping it straight all the time and those that had curls were either wearing weave or had a wig on.

First I needed to find the right products and it was trial and error. Then I needed to sort out the facts and myths about curly hair. I comprised a list of myths I have gathered during this curl journey.

Myths:

1. Washing your hair every day is bad.
Fact: Although shampooing can dry out your natural locks, using a cleansing conditioner is the trick. Water is not the enemy. Water is a great moisturizer. Using a sulfate-free shampoo is the way to go, you don’t need shampoo to cleanse the hair and scalp. Wash hair sparingly. Stick with co-washes throughout the week. Don’t forget to deep condition.

2. You can brush out your curls.
Fact: Brushes are a natural curl nightmare. Stay away from brushes as they will cause frizz. Go with a wide tooth comb or use your fingers. Wide tooth combs gently loosen and detangle curls. I use a wide tooth comb while I condition my hair to make sure the product is equally distributed in my hair. The results detangled hair and my curls stay intact.

 3. Winter time is the best time for curls.
Fact: Both winter and summer months can be a troubling. Humidity is
the root of all evil. Using a great frizz control and lots of moisturizer is ideal. Check out Shea Moisture. Let’s not forget swimming in pools and the ocean. Pools contain lots of damaging chemicals to everyone’s hair. It strips the natural oils. To prevent dryness to your hair and keep those curls flowing. Wash your hair right after you took a dip in the pool. Again. apply moisturizer to your locks. Winter time can bring dry air which causes dryness to your curls. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize…..

4. Cutting your hair will make it grow.
Fact: No it will not make it grow. Cutting only shortens the hair. In my experience the longer your hair gravity takes over causing hair to flow without puffing out.  Cutting my hair make a triangle effect I do not like. Cut only if you have damage to the ends or you are looking for a different style.
5. Oils make your hair grow.
Fact: No, oils are there to protect your hair shaft to prevent damage and breakage. Oils also help hold moisture in. Oils also keep your scalp healthy and flake-free. With that being said never apply moisturizer to the scalp. It causes buildup and clogs the pores. Only use oils on the scalp.

6. Let people touch your hair is OK.
Fact: NO, NO, NO, Keep fingers out your hair. Touching your hair will separate curls and causes frizz. Once you have the desired look you want to leave it alone.

7. You can use a towel to dry your hair.
Fact: Yes, you can but…….you will have to deal with the outcome of frizz. Instead, reach for an old, but a clean t-shirt. The fabric will not grip to curl shaft and pull on your hair, which will lead to frizz. If you prefer a towel no problem just add a little water to head and moisturize.

These myths are just a few I discovered. I’m sure there are a lot more out there. If you have any myths that you would like to share let me know.
